For me, what makes a portrait great is not that it's just "a beautiful image", but that it tells you a story. It evokes emotion and curiosity, it creates an unspoken connection between the subject and the viewer.
The composition draws your eye... highlights and shadows interweave and contrast with one another in unique ways... you wonder what is the subject thinking? These elements give a portrait power. I want to create an image that quietly demands your attention. A great portrait draws you in and stirs feelings that are difficult to put into words. It leaves an impression every time you return to it. As a printed photograph on your wall, it can't help but make you stop and take it all in every time you walk by.
That's why I love shooting portraits. My goal is to create images that feel timeless—capturing brief moments of expression, personality, vulnerability, and connection that existed for only a fraction of a second—that instant in time when I pressed the shutter button. When those elements all come together, you get a portrait that feels genuine.
